Preparing the Purna Kumbha and the thalis
Materials Needed
- One Kalash (Pot)
- Water
- Five mango leaves or any other leaves available
- One coconut
- One cup rice
- Two thali or large plates
- One small lamp, wick and oil, matches
- Flowers
Preparing the thalis
- Spread rice in a thali.
- Fill the kalash half full with water, insert the five leaves, stem side in the water.
- Place the coconut on top of the kalash that will hold the leaves in place. The eyes of the coconut should be facing up.
- Place the kalash on the rice in the thali.
- Set the second thali with a small lamp for arati, with wick and oil.
- One small garland for the padukas. Keep this ready, ahead of
time. - Decorate this arati thali with flowers or anyway you desire.
Receiving Swamiji with Purna Kumbha
- Have two members of the family hold the thalis and one person hold the garland while waiting for Swamiji with Pujya Gurudev’s padukas.
- Let Swamiji walk inside the house.
- First offer the garland to the padukas. Swamiji and others will start the chanting.
- During chanting of Sannyasa Suktam – Na karmana, na prajaya.. the kalash holder will be slightly forward.
- This will be followed with the chanting of (na tatra suryo bhāti, na candra tārakam..); At this time the arati thali holder will move forward and offer arati to the padukas.
संन्यास सूक्तम् Saṁnyāsa Sūktam
न कर्मणा न प्रजया धनेन त्यागेनैके अमृतत्वमानशुः ।
परेण नाकं निहितं गुहायां विभ्राजते तद्यतयो विशन्ति ॥१॥
na karmaṇā na prajayā dhanena tyāgenaike amṛtatvamānaśuḥ |
pareṇa nākaṃ nihitaṃ guhāyāṃ vibhrājate tadyatayo viśanti ||1||
Not by work, nor by progeny or by wealth, but by renunciation alone have some attained immortality. That (immortality) which is even beyond the heaven, is attained by the self-controlled reununciates (as the Self) shining in their heart.
वेदान्तविज्ञानसुनिश्चितार्थाः संन्यास योगाद्यतय शुद्धसत्त्वाः ।
तेब्रह्मलोके तु परान्तकाले परामृतात्परिमुच्यन्ति सर्वे ॥२॥
vedāntavijñānasuniścitārthāḥ saṃnyāsa yogādyataya śuddhasattvāḥ|
tebrahmaloke tu parāntakāle parāmṛtātparimucyanti sarve ||2||
Those who make proper effort and whose minds are pure, who have well-ascertained, clear knowledge of Vedanta, because of a life of sannyasa, they, at the time of the resolution of the individuality in Brahman, are all released from (even) the unmanifest (karma).
दह्रं विपापं परमेश्मभूतं यत्पुण्डरीकं पुरमध्यसग्गस्थम् ।
तत्रापि दह्रं गगनं विशोकस्तस्मिन् यदन्तस्तदुपासितव्यम् ॥३॥
dahraṃ vipāpaṃ parameśmabhūtaṃ yatpuṇḍarīkaṃ
puramadhyasaggastham |
tatrāpi dahraṃ gaganaṃ viśokastasmin yadantastadupāsitavyam
||3||
That, which abides in the city of the body, in the lotus, which is the intellect, and in that small space, that, which is free of all hurt and guilt, free from sorrow, and of the nature of Paramesvara, should be meditated upon.
योवेदादौ स्वरः प्रोक्तो वेदान्ते च प्रतिष्ठितः ।
तस्य प्रकृतिलीनस्य यः परः स महेश्वरः ॥४॥
yovedādau svaraḥ prokto vedānte ca pratiṣṭhitaḥ |
tasya prakṛtilīnasya yaḥ paraḥ sa maheśvaraḥ
||4||

न तत्र सूर्यो भाति न चन्द्रतारकं
नेमा विद्युतो भान्ति कुतोऽयमग्निः।
तमेव भान्तमनुभाति सर्वं
तस्य भासा सर्वमिदं विभाति॥
na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṃ
nemā vidyuto bhānti kuto’yamagniḥ|
tameva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṃ
tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṃ vibhāti||
Neither does the sun shine there, nor the moon with all the stars, nor does this lightning shine. What to say of this fire? Everything shines after him who alone shines. By His light all this shines variously.
